Description:
A collection of overtures by Weber (1786-18266) by Gustav Kuhn, known as an excellent opera conductor. This collection includes the well-known "The Magic Bullet" as well as some lesser-known works that are rarely heard. Weber, a predecessor of Wagner, was active in the early days of German Romanticism, and performed many of his own operas at the Staatskapelle Dresden in order to break away from the "Italian opera" that was at its height at the time and to establish German opera as the dominant form of music. The Staatskapelle still regards Weber as an important composer. This album contains a series of beautiful overtures to his operas, recorded in 1985 at the Lukekirche Dresden. (C)RS
